On the way from Nagoya to historical village of Shirakawa-go which is a world heritage in Japan, we enjoyed a hot spring called Gero Onsen in Gifu Prefecture which is one of Japan’s three most famous hot spring resorts, along with Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture and Arima Onsen in Hyogo Prefecture. It is believed that Gero Onsen is effective in treating rheumatism and relieving fatigue. There are some open air baths and free footbaths.
After we enjoyed “Onsen”, the hot spring, we next visited Takayama City in Gifu Prefecture. This is area which still has atmosphere of Edo Period in the 17th century. The building in the photo is called Takayama Jinya. In 1692, the Edo Government decided to control this area directly. Since then until the Meiji Restoration in 1868, the Edo Government sent 25 local governors in total and they administered this area. Takayama Jinya consists of an office of administration, houses of governors and warehouses. After the Meiji Restration, those buildings have been used for local governor office. In 1969, the local governor office was moved to other location and Gifu Prefecture decided to repair those buildings to maintain historical appearance because Takayama Jinya is the only one Edo government outpost in Japan still exists now.
