Gifu Castle in Gifu Prefecture, Japan

Japanese Castles

Gifu Castle is a castle situated on the top of the Kinkazan Mountain at 329m elevation. During the age of Civil Wars, Dosan Saito who was a warring lord of Mino Province owned this castle. Mino Province is old name of Gifu Prefecture. On August, 1567, Nobunaga Oda who was one of tree heroes during the age of Civil Wars attacked this castle. At that time, Tatsuoki Saito who was a grandson of Dosan Saito owned this castle. Nobunaga Oda won this battle and took Gifu Castle. He started his unification of the whole country from this castle.

Current buildings of the castle were rebuilt by Gifu Castle Rebuilt Union in July, 1956.

There is a ropeway from the foot of the Kinkazan Mountain to the top.  The ropeway is available every 15minutes from 9:30am to 5:30pm. It takes you to the top in about 4minutes, then, you need to walk to the castle takes about 8minutes.

From the top of the main hall of the castle, you can see Nagaragawa River flows through Gifu City below your eyes. Also, if you are lucky, you can see Mt. Ena and Mt. Kiso-Ontakesan in the east, and Mt. Norikuradake and Japan Alps in the north. Also, you can see Mt. Ibukisan and Suzuka Mountains in the west and Noube Plain and Kisogawa River flows into Ise Bay

This is one of the Japanese Castles I recommend you to visit.
